Cuban Visiting Scholars Program on U.S. Policy towards Cuba
Announcement: on Cuban Visiting Scholars Program
Announcement
The David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University is pleased to invite applicants from Cuba, seeking to advance research in the area of U.S. policy towards Cuba, for its visiting researchers program for the 2005-06 academic year.

Through a grant from the Christopher Reynolds Foundation, a small number of Cuban visiting scholars will be selected to spend four weeks in residence at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies. Examples of the types of research the Center would seek to support include work aimed at examining U.S.-Cuba cooperation on issues including migration, antiterrorism, drug interdiction, trade, U.S. policy on people-to-people exchanges with Cuba in academic, scientific, cultural and religious spheres, as well as studies aimed at examining the effects of recent U.S. policy changes on specific policy issues such as OFAC allowances on Cuban purchases of U.S. agricultural products and Cuban-American travel to the island.

While in residence at Harvard and working on their own research projects during a four-week visit, Cuban scholars will have opportunities to interact with Harvard faculty and students, use the University library resources, as well as participate in Center conferences and seminars. Visiting researchers from Cuba will receive office space at the Center.  Researchers are expected to present a lecture on the substance of their research and to be available for consultation with faculty, students and others at Harvard who are interested in their work.

Applicants need to be fluent in English, and have a clearly defined research project for their proposed stay at Harvard.

Applications must be written in English and include:

  • A cover letter in English, indicating why the applicant would like to come to Harvard and the proposed length of the stay;
  • A brief proposal describing the research intended to be done at Harvard;
  • An article you have written related to the topic of your proposal;
  • A resume or curriculum vitae; and,
  • Two letters of reference from professional colleagues testifying to the qualifications of the candidate and the importance of the research.

An interdisciplinary panel of Harvard faculty affiliated with the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies reviews all completed applications and select candidates on the basis of the candidate’s qualifications, the quality of the proposed research project and its potential for promoting academic collaboration. The short-term research visits by the selected Cuban scholars are subject to the U.S. government granting visas for residencies at Harvard University.

Applications for the Fall 2005 and Spring 2006 semesters will be accepted no later than June 15, 2005.
