El libro tiene como editores a Jorge Domínguez, Omar Everleny Pérez Villanueva y Lorena Barbería, y es una colección de artículos que recorren una amplia gama de aspectos de la sociedad y la economía cubanas, fruto de los debates e intercambios teórico-metodológicos sostenidos, desde hace años, por un grupo de conocidos académicos cubanos y norteamericanos, a través del Programa Cuba del DRCLAS.

| "Se incluyen en este volúmen dos libros muy diferentes aunque relacionados: Las ideas en Cuba. Proceso del pensamiento político, filosófico y crítico en Cuba, principalmente durante el siglo XIX, Premio Nacional de Literatura, publicado por la editorial Trópico en 1938 (dos tomos), y La filosofía en Cuba, editado por el Fondo de Cultura Económica de México en 1948".
En ambos libros Medardo Vitier abarca el ideario de los fundadores de la cultura cubana en sus diversas dimensiones, uno más extenso y el otro más breve, pero dedicados exclusivamente al pensamiento filosófico cubano. La edición incluye además un anexo: Martí, estudio integral de M. Vitier, así como un homenaje que le relaizara al autor J. M. Chacón y Calvo. Las palabras liminares son de Cintio Vitier. |

| Esta edición de la polémica filosófica desarrollada en Cuba en diferentes medios de prensa entre los años 1838 y 1840 es reeditada por la Colección Clásicos del Pensamiento Cubano que desarrolla un equipo de la Casa de Altos Estudios de la Universidad de La Habana. La polémica está ordenarla cronológicamente de manera que no se pierda la intensidad del debate a diferencia de la edición realizada por Roberto Agramonte en los años cuarenta. Se señalan, sin embargo, los temas debatidos tales como las cuestiones de método, ideología, moral religiosa y sobre el eclecticismo, donde polemizaron José de la Luz y Caballero, Manuel y José Z. In Cuba something curious has happened over the past fifteen years. The government has allowed vocal criticism of its policies to be expressed within the arts. Filmmakers, rappers, and visual and performance artists have addressed sensitive issues including bureaucracy, racial and gender discrimination, emigration, and alienation. How can this vibrant body of work be reconciled with the standard representations of a repressive, authoritarian cultural apparatus? In Cuba Represent! Sujatha Fernandesa scholar and musician who has performed in Cubaanswers that question.
Combining textual analyses of films, rap songs, and visual artworks; ethnographic material collected in Cuba; and insights into the nation’s history and political economy, Fernandes details the new forms of engagement with official institutions that have opened up as a result of changing relationships between state and society in the post-Soviet period. She demonstrates that in a moment of extreme hardship and uncertainty, the Cuban state has moved to a more permeable model of power. Artists and other members of the public are collaborating with government actors to partially incorporate critical cultural expressions into official discourse. The Cuban leadership has come to recognize the benefits of supporting artists: rappers offer a link to increasingly frustrated black youth in Cuba; visual artists are an important source of international prestige and hard currency; and films help unify Cubans through community discourse about the nation. Cuba Represent! reveals that part of the socialist government’s resilience stems from its ability to absorb oppositional ideas and values.
